Hey there, how’s it going?

I’m Claire, I’m 17, and I’m currently a Fresher at University of St Andrews studying Astrophysics. I’ve created this blog to put out there my experiences of University, to give a bit of insight into what it is like being a student. If you’ve got any questions, feel free to leave me a comment, whether it’s about St Andrews specifically, or just about student life, gimme a shout :)

Peace out!

Thanks for an honest assessment of the UCAS application process. My son (18) is applying to 5 schools. As an American (from York, Pennsylvania), the process can be quite confusing. After finally sending in the application in late December, it doesn’t seem so bad. Lots of vocabulary just doesn’t translate well in our “across the pond” English. He is in at Dundee (added as an afterthought) and Glasgow and is waiting to hear from St. Andrews (his #1), Edinburgh, and Aberdeen. He too wants to study physics/astrophysics. We meet Bruce Sinclair on a visit in November–quite a guy!

Keep blogging. Would love to hear about St. Andrews through the eyes of a fresher

This is just what I’ve been looking for.. someone who has been there, done that and got the t-shirt! My name is Chris, I’m 17, and I’ve just recieved my offers from UCAS. I got a bit carried away with St. Andrews myself, applying to three courses (astrophysics being my preffered choice.. i think)! I have also applied to Heriot Watt and to Strathclyde, and have 5 Unconditionals (soooo excited)!! I think your blog is pretty immense, and was wondering if you could clarify the applying for accomodation process for me? I know I want to stay in New Hall, but don’t know much about grants/bursaries available?! Can’t wait to get there though!! Roll on sept 08!!

Hey Chris, How’s it going? Congrats on the unconditionals :)

I’m not too sure about grants and bursaries available for halls, most of that is dependant on your parents/guardians income when you apply for your student loan- ie, how much you get between loan and bursary. There is however scholarships available for Physics at St Andrews- like a £1000 entrant scholarship (which my friend Jonny is enjoying very much (alright for some!)) and a £4000 (per year I think) Institute of Phys scholarship available. You can find out about all of these on the St Ands website. (http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/admissions/ug/Financialinformation/Scholarships/Subject-based/)

Hope this helps, all the best

Claire
